No compression or shearing activity can occur over the reconstructed auricle for two weeks. To facilitate this, a firm plastic cup dressing with velcro straps is worn over the auricle day and night for two weeks. Because the child must cooperate in their care during this critical postoperative period, immature or hyperactive children are a relative contradiction for this procedure.

Dr. Romo designed this guard specifically for reconstruction surgeries. It provides increased clearance above the ear so as to reduce the risks of bandage slippage. Due to the guard's secure fit to the head, there is a reduced risk of pressure on the bandaged wound, and the chance of infection is greatly reduced. A poorly designed or improperly used ear protector can cause skin injury or skin irritation. Dr. Romo's modern design has a thicker, softer foam padding making it superior to the thirty-year-old design of the Glasscock™ ear dressing.
Additionally, Dr. Romo's design matches the shape of an ear in that the back edge is higher where the back of the ear is further from the head. Because of this it conforms to the head securely and increases the patient's comfort. Because of this design, the Romo-Guard™ prevents the dressing from resting on the healing ear. This protects against the possibility of necrosis—the death of tissue caused by loss of blood supply.
Some individuals are highly reactive to Latex. The Romo-Guard™ is made from a non-latex material. Latex-based materials, when coming in contact with the surface of the skin, can aggravate the skin which can lead to infection.
